McHenry County, North Dakota is located in the north-central part of the state and is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The county was established in 1873 and was named after James McHenry, a Revolutionary War hero and signer of the United States Constitution. The first settlers in the area were mostly of German and Scandinavian descent, and the county was initially populated by homesteaders and ranchers. The county seat is Towner, which was founded in 1884. The county was an important agricultural center in the early 20th century, with wheat, oats, barley, and flax being the primary crops. The county also had a thriving dairy industry, with many farmers raising cows for milk and butter. The Great Depression had a major impact on the county, with many farmers losing their land and leaving the area. The population of the county declined from a peak of 8,000 in 1930 to just over 4,000 in 1940. The economy of the county began to recover in the 1950s, with the development of oil and gas fields in the area. This led to an increase in population and the establishment of several small towns. Today, McHenry County is a rural area with a population of just over 5,000. Agriculture is still an important part of the economy, with wheat, oats, barley, and flax being the primary crops. The county also has a thriving tourism industry, with many visitors coming to enjoy the area's natural beauty and outdoor activities.
