Oliver County, North Dakota was established in 1883 and is located in the southwestern part of the state. It is named after James H. Oliver, a prominent early settler and politician in the area. The county was originally part of the Dakota Territory, and was one of the original counties established when North Dakota became a state in 1889. The first settlers in the area were ranchers and farmers, who were attracted to the area by its fertile soil and abundant natural resources. The first permanent settlement in the county was established in 1884, and the county seat was established in Center in 1885. The early settlers of Oliver County were mostly of German and Scandinavian descent, and the county was heavily influenced by these cultures. The county was also home to a large population of Native Americans, including the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara tribes. The economy of Oliver County was largely based on agriculture, with wheat, corn, and oats being the primary crops. Cattle ranching was also an important part of the local economy. In the early 20th century, the county experienced a population boom as oil and gas were discovered in the area. This led to the development of several small towns, including Center, New Town, and White Shield. The county has also been home to several notable figures, including former North Dakota Governor William Langer, who was born in Center in 1887. Today, Oliver County is home to a population of approximately 3,000 people. The county is still largely agricultural, with wheat, corn, and oats being the primary crops. Oil and gas production is also an important part of the local economy.
