Ransom County, North Dakota is located in the southeastern corner of the state and is bordered by Richland, Sargent, and LaMoure Counties. The county was established in 1873 and was named after Alexander Ransom, a Civil War veteran and former governor of Minnesota. The first settlers in the area were mostly of German and Scandinavian descent, and the county was primarily an agricultural area. The first post office was established in 1874, and the first school was built in 1876. In the late 19th century, the county experienced a population boom due to the arrival of the railroad. This allowed for the development of several small towns, including Lisbon, Enderlin, and Fort Ransom. The county was also home to several Native American tribes, including the Sioux, Mandan, and Hidatsa. The Standing Rock Indian Reservation was established in 1868 and is located in the northern part of the county. In the early 20th century, the county experienced a period of economic growth due to the development of the oil and gas industry. This led to the establishment of several oil refineries and other related businesses. Today, Ransom County is a largely rural area with a population of around 5,000. The county is home to several small towns, including Fort Ransom, Enderlin, and Lisbon. The county is also home to several state parks, including Fort Ransom State Park and Sheyenne National Grassland.
