Williams County, North Dakota is located in the northwestern corner of the state and is bordered by Montana to the west and Canada to the north. The county was established in 1891 and was named after Erastus Williams, a prominent early settler in the area. The first settlers in the area were mostly of German and Scandinavian descent, and the county was initially populated by homesteaders and ranchers. The first post office in the county was established in 1892, and the first newspaper, the Williston Graphic, was published in 1895. The county experienced a population boom in the early 1900s due to the discovery of oil in the area. The first oil well was drilled in the county in 1951, and the population of the county grew from just over 4,000 in 1950 to over 10,000 by 1960. The county has since become an important center for oil and gas production in the state, and is home to several large oil companies, including Hess Corporation, Marathon Oil, and Continental Resources. The county is also home to several large agricultural operations, including wheat, barley, and sunflower farms. The county is also home to several large wind farms, which generate electricity for the region. The county seat is Williston, which is the largest city in the county and the hub of the region's economy. Williston is home to several large employers, including the Williston State College, the Williston Herald newspaper, and the Williston Basin International Airport. The county is also home to several recreational attractions, including the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and the Lewis and Clark State Park.
