The county was established in 1891 and was named after Erastus Williams, a prominent early settler in the area. The first settlers in the area were mostly of German and Scandinavian descent, and the county was initially populated by homesteaders and ranchers. The first post office in the county was established in 1892, and the first newspaper, the Williston Graphic, was published in 1895.
